Advice to get a grade 1, 2 or 3 in CSEC Mathematics Exams

Advice to pass CSEC Mathematics Exams

The Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate(CSEC) Mathematics Examination consists of three papers.

1. Paper 1- Multiple Choice

2. Paper 2-Structured.

3. School-based Assessment(SBA) or Paper III

Each paper has a different weighing on the final mark of 100%.

Paper 1 is  30%

Paper 2 is 50%

Paper 3/SBA is 20%

Once enrolled in a Secondary school, candidates must submit an SBA and do not have to do Paper 3.

This SBA is done at home with the guidance of the teacher. My advice is to start the SBA early and get

feedback from the teacher because it is the teacher that corrects the SBAs. Doing this can ensure that you

get at least 17 out of 20. With a mark like that, you can have 17% or more before you even sit the exam.

If you are a private candidate, however, you will have to do a written paper 3. This is usually a practical

question.

Next, let us focus on Paper 1 which consists of 60 multiple-choice questions. It is well-known fact that

multiple-choice questions often repeat themselves yearly.  My advice is to practice at least 10 years worth

of questions, doing this can help you achieve at least 55 out of 60. This will give you an additional 27.5%,

or more.

So....without having paper 2 marks you can have (17% + 27.5%) 44.5%

Only 5.5% more to pass!!! In paper 2 this 5.5% represents 11 marks!

I call paper 1 and the SBA, the foundation, once you have a solid foundation you are in a good position to

pass. The type of house you build on the foundation will be represented by your grade (I, II, III or IV) and

this will be basically up to you, the individual.

If you don’t take your time on paper II and do not prepare, not even a little or you write anything on your

paper. Most likely you will fail even though you did a good mark in the SBA and paper 1.

To prepare, I suggest you learn all the topics on the syllabus

https://www.cxc.org/SiteAssets/CSEC_Mathematics_Syllabus_with_Specimen_Papers.pdf

and do practice past papers. These papers and answers can be easily found on the internet with a simple

google search.

If you prepare for the exam and try your best, it is very easy to get the 5.5% and more on paper II to pass.

If you prepare and put in the work and build a beautiful house you can easily get a grade one.

It’s up to you and the amount of work that you are willing to spend preparing for the Mathematics

examination!
